About Fuel Economy Units

Countries measure fuel economy in two opposite ways. Canada and Europe measure fuel consumption: how many litres a car burns to drive 100 km (L/100km), where a lower number is better. Korea, Japan, and the United States measure distance: how far a car goes on one litre (km/L) or one gallon (MPG), where a higher number is better. That is why a car rated 8 L/100km in Canada shows up as 12.5 km/L in Korea and about 29.4 MPG in the US.

Fuel Economy Conversion Formulas

Use these formulas to convert between fuel economy units:

  • km/L = 100 ÷ L/100km
  • L/100km = 100 ÷ km/L
  • US MPG = 235.21 ÷ L/100km
  • UK MPG = 282.48 ÷ L/100km
  • US MPG = km/L × 2.352

For example, a car rated 7 L/100km:

100 ÷ 7 = 14.29 km/L, 235.21 ÷ 7 = 33.60 MPG (US)

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert L/100km to MPG?

Divide 235.21 by the L/100km number to get US MPG. For example, 235.21 ÷ 8 L/100km = 29.4 MPG. For UK (imperial) MPG, divide 282.48 instead.

How do I convert km/L to L/100km?

Divide 100 by the km/L number. For example, 100 ÷ 12.5 km/L = 8 L/100km. The same formula works the other way: 100 ÷ 8 L/100km = 12.5 km/L.

Is a higher or lower number better?

For L/100km, lower is better, because it is how much fuel the car burns to drive 100 km. For km/L and MPG, higher is better, because it is how far the car goes on one litre or one gallon.

Which countries use L/100km, km/L, and MPG?

Canada, Europe, and Australia use L/100km. Korea, Japan, and India use km/L (Korea calls it 연비). The United States uses US MPG, and the UK uses imperial MPG, which is about 20% higher than US MPG for the same car because an imperial gallon is larger.

Why does my Canadian car manual show MPG?

Canada officially rates cars in L/100km, but some older cars, imported manuals, and dashboards still show imperial MPG. Use the MPG (UK) box for those numbers, not US MPG.
